What the index measures

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, published by alternative.me, condenses several market signals into one daily number between 0 (extreme fear) and 100 (extreme greed). It is designed around Bitcoin, the asset that drives most of the market's mood.

Its inputs are price volatility and maximum drawdowns compared with recent averages, trading momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap, and Google search trends. Higher volatility and a rising Bitcoin dominance push the score toward fear; strong momentum and buzz push it toward greed.

How to read it

0–25 is extreme fear, 25–45 fear, 45–55 neutral, 55–75 greed and 75–100 extreme greed. The level matters less than the context: a reading of 30 after weeks at 70 says something different from a 30 that has held for a month.

Many market participants treat sustained extremes as a sign that positioning has become one-sided. Others note that the index can stay extreme for long stretches during strong trends. It describes sentiment; it does not predict prices.
